Chowrasia wins European Golf tournament

SSP Chowrasia charged from behind Sunday with a 5-under-par 67 and won the European Tour‘s Avantha Masters in his native India.

Chowrasia started the day in fifth place but only two strokes behind third-round leader Robert Coles. He piled up seven birdies over his first 14 holes and watched as Coles’ final tries to catch him slipped away. Chowrasia finished the tournament at 15-under 273.

It was the second professional victory for Chowrasia but first in three years. He collected more than $410,000 for the win while Coles took home the second-place check of $274,000.

Coles, who shot 2-under 70 Sunday, had a 72-hole total of 14-under. Gregory Havret (68 Sunday) was third at 13-under and Robert-Jan Derksen (69) ended up 12-under for fourth.

Chowrasia had three straight birdies from 14-17 in the third round to keep Coles within sight and moved ahead with consistent play Sunday that included four birdies in the five-hole span from 7-11.

His lone blemish was a double-bogey at the par-3 16th that gave Coles a chance. Coles, however, took a bogey with a three-putt from 20 feet at the par-5 18th hole.
