Reliance Broadcast Network Limited (RBNL), part of the Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group, and CBS Studios International, a division of CBS Corporation, has announced their equally owned joint venture that brings together two of the world’s pre-eminent media and entertainment companies.

Indian television industry which projects high growth rate, and we are confident that our deep understanding of the Indian consumer’s entertainment requirement and advertiser needs, coupled with CBS’ reputation for creating superior content, will offer unmatched and pioneering entertainment to audiences in India and across the Indian subcontinent.”

“Reliance is an international media and entertainment powerhouse and the perfect partner for CBS to expand further into India,” said Armando Nunez, President, CBS Studios International. “The vast programming, production and media resources of our two companies position us extremely well to serve audiences, advertisers and all constituents of these new channels. This is an exciting alliance with potential for amazing synergies and new opportunities for our companies in one of the world’s most dynamic business and media markets.”

The Rs. 265.5 billion burgeoning Indian television market is estimated to have 134 million homes with televisions, of which 103 million have access to cable or satellite television, including direct-to-home (DTH). India is poised to become the world’s largest DTH satellite pay TV market by 2012, overtaking the U.S. with a projected 35 million subscribers.

While BIG CBS will initially focus on the English language general entertainment channels, the joint venture may also explore the option of launching Hindi Language and Regional Language general entertainment channels, along with other possible projects in the future.

The joint venture with Reliance in India marks CBS Studios International’s second significant launch of international channels in key markets in the past year. Last September, CBS established a joint venture with Chello Media to launch a suite of CBS-branded channels in the U.K. The company also has ownership interests in SCI FI and TV1, which are pay television channels in Australia.

To put pressure on Indian Premier League(IPL) governing body, the National Broadcasters Associations (NBA) a body representing 34 Channels has decided to boycott the upcoming IPL event in protest against the “arbitrary” guidelines and certain contentious clauses regarding footage of the Twenty20 event.

The third season of IPL will kick off from March 12 in India. The second edition was shifted to South Africa because of security reasons as it coincided with general election.

It is to be noted that international news agencies had boycotted the first two editions of the cash-rich event because of certain contentious clauses in the media accreditation guidelines.

Kimi Raikkonen quit F1 joins World Rally Championship Mon, 15 Feb 2010 06:16:18 +0000 mohan

Citing predictable point system, the 2007 world champion Ferrari F1 driver, Kimi Raikkonen has decided to quit Formula 1 and has joined World Rally Championship (WRC).

“I was in Formula One for a long time and, right now, I don’t miss it. In F1, testing and everything is exactly the same. You go to the same circuits and do lap after lap. The only variable is whether it rains or not,” News of the World quoted Raikkonen.

“The WRC is more open than F1, it’s more relaxed and there’s a warmer feeling. The teams are friends together. In rallying, everything is completely different to Formula One. There are so many variables – different conditions, different roads and different surfaces,” he added.

“It is a big challenge. Every corner is different. In Formula One that’s not the case.”

Raikkonen is not excited by the return of F1 legend Schumacher, who will race for Mercedes GP under the guidance of Ross Brawn.

“For me, it doesn’t matter who is racing in Formula One now. Michael probably started to miss it and he has got a good option now – so it’s good for him. Let’s see how he does,” Raikkonen said.

“I have this new challenge and I am more interested in this right now. But even when I raced in F1 I never really looked at what time everyone did because you know the details before the next race,” he added. (ANI)

Cricket gets IOC nod Sat, 13 Feb 2010 09:55:03 +0000 Ricky

All hurdles were cleared for Cricket at the International Olympic Committee (IOC) future games meet. Now, India hopes to get one more medal at the 2020 Olympic Games.

Cricket, power boating and sports climbing became the latest sports to be officially recognised by the IOC, a status necessary before launching a bid to become part of the Olympic programme.

“The session gave definite recognition to the three federations,” IOC spokesman Mark Adams told reporters. The three sports can now bid to join the 2020 Olympics as the programme is always determined seven years in advance.

Golf and rugby were latest inclusions in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games when an IOC session voted them in last year.

The decision about new sports for the 2020 Games will be taken at the IOC session in Buenos Aires in 2013 where the host country will also be picked.
